A
Chinese construction firm has built a 57-storeys building in just 19 workings days.
The Mini Sky City in the city of Changsha was built at a rate of 3 floors in a
day using a modular method. The 200-metre skyscraper contains 800 apartments
and office space sufficient to accommodate 4000 workers.
This
project was built by Chinese company Broad Sustainable Building (BSB).
Originally, they wanted to build a 97-storeys tower that would have claimed
title of the world’s tallest tower. But the work was halted at 20-storeys while
the plans were reviewed, and it was lowered to 57-storeys because of the
building’s proximity to an airport.
In
addition to speedier construction, Broad is also determined to make its new
building easier on the environment. According to the engineering firm, its
prefabricated construction technique helped it cut back truck deliveries on the
project by 15,000 trips and reduces construction dust. These modular methods have been used for
high-rise apartment blocks elsewhere, including in Britain and US. Some critics
said that the method could lead to cityscapes with over uniform architecture
but the associate director of the engineering consulting firm believed these
method was worth developing because it could become a safe and reliable way to
build skyscrapers quickly. The structure is safe and can withstand earthquakes.
The building is reportedly energy
efficient, as it uses quadruple-paned glass that should reduce CO2 emissions
by 12,000 tons.
BSB
spent four and a half months fabricating the building’s 2736 modules before
began. The first 20 floors were completed last year and the remaining 37 were
built from 31 January to 17 February 2015. This skyscraper claim as the world
faster’s builders.
